Mom, it's after 7

Updated: Aug 8, 2021

Hi, my name is Allison and I'm a Trekkie. I have seen many of the movies and some of the shows. I just really enjoy it. I had seen some of the movies and enjoyed them before last year. A dear colleague of mine had suggested I check out the Voyager series. She had liked it so much she named her daughter Kathryn, after the captain of Voyager, Kathryn Janeway. Being as how it was quarantine and we had a little extra time at home and after grueling shifts at work I needed an escape, I checked it out.

I ended up streaming the entire series, all seven seasons. I found the show to be kind, inclusive, funny, a little hokey, and a pleasant way to recharge. Captain Janeway was a delightfully strong female lead, Chakotay a great foil to his captain, and the other characters worked together on screen like family. My daughter and husband both tolerated it, they watched sometimes with me. They were not as into the show as I was but still were pleasantly entertained.

When I had finished Voyager I felt that emptiness you feel when you finish a television or book series. That "what do I do now?" confusion. So... I searched series listed and discovered Star Trek Deep Space 9 also was comprised of seven seasons. Assuming quarantine would continue for a full year I decided to give it a whirl.

I quickly fell in love with it as well, with Captain Sisko, Jake, Quark, Julian Beshear, Garak, Kira, Odo and the others. The chemistry and comradery in their ensemble cast and the way the navigated the issues they faced and the war with the Dominion had many applications to issues in real life. I especially liked how it portrayed Sisko, a widower and single father, trying to move forward in his life after loosing Jake's mother in a starship battle. It made it even more human somehow.

When I had watched all seven seasons of DS9 I again felt the emptiness from it being completed. I then figured, well, Jean-Luc Picard is one of the most famous Star Trek captains ever. I should probably find out why. So, I began watching The Next Generation. I am still watching it, I think I am in season four currently. It has the same themes of comradery, love for their fellow life forms, acceptance of all, and commitment to their cause Voyager and DS9 had shown.

Rico, telling me it is time to

go watch Star Trek.

Through all this, Rico has become accustomed to my coming into the living room after seven in the evenings, whether I work the next day or not, and watching an episode. And many days I do. It is sort of my wind down routine. He has become so used to this that if I remain in the art room (hanging out with my husband and/or working on my own projects) he comes into the art room and begins to pester me by patting my arm with his paw, sitting pretty waiting for my attention, and even whining a little to let me know it is time to come watch Star Trek on the couch with him. It is really adorable.

Those actions I mentioned are Level 1. If I continue to put him off and tell him it is not Star Trek time yet he will move to Level 2. Level 2 involves a happy howling to remind me it is, indeed, time to come watch with him and he is now impatiently waiting for me. If I foolishly continue to put him off Level 3 goes into effect. Level 3 involves climbing up on my lap or under my feet to try to make sure I understand I am off schedule and it is unacceptable. So, usually, I get up, turn out my light at my desk, and go watch Star Trek. Rico will come in and curl up on the couch near me, content to sit with me and be still.

It is amazing to me how quickly they settle into a routine. And how quickly they get used to something and pout when it doesn't happen. It throws them off. They are emotional creatures, animals. And while we care for them they give us great joy and lots of laughs.

What is something quirky your pet has done in your training? Because, let's face it, they train us just as much as we train them.

Be well, y'all.
