Barrel of Bras

Updated: Aug 8, 2021

I know, that title sounds super freaking weird. It is the best way I can think to describe what happens every time I wash my bras. This ever happened to you? You gather your bras that are due for washing. You lay them out carefully over your arm so they aren't tangled. You take them to the laundry room and carefully place them in the tub one at a time, evenly, never loading them lopsided. You pour in the soap, set the cycle on delicate, the temperature on cold, and shut the lid. And pray.

Twenty or so minutes later when the washer buzzes it's done, you lift the lid, hoping it's not a mess... You reach in and try to pull out one single bra. Just one. That's all you want. What you end up pulling out is a chain of twisted, turned, tucked, and tangled bras. Hooks are stuck in pieces of lace. Straps are wrapped around cups. Material is wadded up into balls the size of a cantaloupe. You sigh. You now have a super expensive version of Barrel of Monkeys in your own laundry room. I say super expensive because, well, good bras ain't cheap y'all. I am on my feet 40+ a week. I am a sterile compounding technician which means I have to hold items up in sterile air during those 40+ at shoulder level. The support from my bra often is the difference between just being tired at the end of the day and being tired and nursing a sore back. I wear Soma bras from their Embraceable line. They are like wearing a hug!

I never liked playing Barrel of Monkeys as a kid. It was way too chaotic for me. I liked things like Uno or Sorry. Simple colors, simple numbers, no balancing required. I like it even less as an adult, especially when my $45 bras are the monkeys. Oh, I know, there are devices you can buy to prevent this. And for what I spend on bras I probably should, but dang, they can be pricey. And you can only wash three or four at a time. That seems inefficient. Also most have zippers or snaps or buttons, which seem would also snag on lace pieces or straps or other hooks. Besides, I am getting pretty good at this game. I may try for semi pro next year. You won't be catching my playing Barrel of Monkeys with my grandkids, but I bet I can teach them how to play Barrel of Bras pretty easily.

So if you're one of those that struggles with your own barrel of bras, you're my soul sister. Bring it in for a hug fam.

Be well, y'all.
